Forms in Nature - Butterfly and Underwater Scene

Design & Animation Breakdown

Desmond Du of NoSleep Creative invited Nestor Tomaselli and I to collaborate on this Master Study, one of our favorite pieces of Motion Design.

Design: Nestor recreated the butterfly scene in Illustrator and Photoshop for a tutorial on the NoSleep Creative channel, and I chose to recreate the underwater scene using Illustrator for all the shapes and textures. We each illustrated once scene and I later animated the underwater and butterfly scenes.

Animation: Using a script to create nulls from paths, I was able to animate the butterfly’s subtle movements and make it feel organic. The script allows you to stretch and move each segment easily as if it were a puppet on a string, allowing for precise movements. The underwater scene was a process of finding the right subtle movements for a

The other smaller elements such as schools of fish or butterflies were created using expressions.

Style & Process Notes

CC Ball Action was used to simulate the halftone overlay during compositing. For the bokeh light particles a combination of fast box and gaussian blur was used to mimic the softness. I was able to see during the motion test that applying a glow simply would not provide the desired effect.
